Japan Visit Visa From Pakistan 2026: Requirements, Fees and How to Apply

Japan is the kind of destination that rewards careful planning. A single trip can combine the neon streets of Tokyo, the temples and bamboo groves of Kyoto, the food markets of Osaka, the snow of Hokkaido or the beaches of Okinawa, and one of the most punctual transport systems in the world. For Pakistani travellers, the journey starts with one practical question, and this guide answers it in full: how do you get a Japan visit visa from Pakistan in 2026, what does it cost, and what should you prepare?

The short answer is encouraging. If you hold an ordinary Pakistani passport, you do need a visa before you travel. The application route is clear, the standard processing time is six working days for a complete file, and Pakistani passport holders are exempt from the consular visa fee. What you pay is the visa application centre service charge. The rest of this guide explains the route, the documents, the costs and the mistakes that cause delays.

Every visa fact below was checked on 19 October 2026 against the Embassy of Japan in Pakistan, the Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi, and the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). Where a figure comes from the application centre rather than the Embassy, that is stated plainly so you know exactly how much weight to give it.

Do Pakistanis Need a Visa for Japan?

Yes. Japan has reciprocal visa exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions, listed by MOFA. Pakistan is not among them. The list covers countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Turkiye, but not Pakistan. If you hold an ordinary Pakistani passport, you must obtain a visa before you travel to Japan. An airline can refuse boarding if you arrive at the airport without one.

A visa is pre-entry permission, not a guarantee of entry. The final decision is made by the immigration officer at the port of entry in Japan. That is why the documents you submit matter: they are the evidence on which both the visa decision and, later, the landing decision rest.

What the Japan Visit Visa Lets You Do

The short-term stay visa for Temporary Visitors covers stays of up to 90 days for sightseeing, business meetings, or visiting family and friends, without engaging in any activity involving remuneration. In practice, that means:

  • Tourism. Sightseeing, holidays, cultural visits, attending events as a spectator.
  • Visiting family or friends. Staying with or visiting people who live in Japan.
  • Short business visits. Meetings, conferences, exhibitions, contract discussions and similar unpaid business activity.

It does not allow you to take up paid employment, run a business, or study on a long-term basis in Japan. If your real purpose is work or long-term study, you need a different status of residence, and for work or long-term stay you must first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility through the inviting party in Japan. Applying as a tourist is not a shortcut to working in Japan, and misrepresenting your purpose is one of the fastest ways to lose credibility with any embassy.

How to Apply From Pakistan

Since 1 April 2024, the Embassy of Japan in Islamabad does not accept ordinary visa applications directly. Only diplomatic and official visa applications go to the Embassy desk. Every ordinary applicant, whether a tourist, a family visitor or a business visitor, applies through the Japan Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Global / Gerry’s Visa. The Embassy says this plainly and asks applicants not to request special treatment or direct submission, because it slows down processing for everyone.

Which centre serves you

Jurisdiction follows where you live:

  • Islamabad centre. Applicants from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan normally apply in Islamabad.
  • Karachi centre. Residents of Sindh and Balochistan apply in Karachi, under the Consulate-General of Japan.

The Consulate-General in Karachi advises residents outside Sindh and Balochistan to apply in Islamabad. If you are unsure which centre covers your address, confirm with the VFS contact point before you book: telephone +92-51-8439346, email INFO.JAPANPAK@VFSGLOBAL.COM, or the VFS Japan page for Pakistan at visa.vfsglobal.com/pak/en/jpn/.

Step-by-step application guide

  1. Confirm your purpose and timing. Decide whether you are travelling as a tourist, visiting family or friends, or on a short business visit. Do not apply more than about 90 days before your intended travel date at the Islamabad centre, and allow plenty of time before your trip, because extra checks can take far longer than the standard six working days.
  2. Download the checklist and the application form. Use the current checklist published by the visa application centre and the official Japan visa application form. Fill the form in English, in block letters, leaving no column blank. Sign it by hand.
  3. Prepare your documents. Work through the checklist in this guide and arrange your file in the same order as the checklist. Photocopies should be on A4 paper.
  4. Book your appointment. Book online through the VFS Global Japan page for Pakistan and pay the service charge online at the time of booking. Keep the booking confirmation safe.
  5. Attend the centre in person. Bring your originals and photocopies. Applications with incomplete documents may not be accepted, so check your file against the checklist before you leave home.
  6. Wait for processing. The standard period is six working days from the time you apply at the centre until the visa is issued at the earliest, when there is no problem with the contents of the application. If your file needs thorough examination, it can take much longer, in some cases several months.
  7. Collect your passport. Collect it from the centre, or use the courier return option if you chose it. Check the visa sticker as soon as you receive it: your name, passport number, validity dates and number of entries should all match your plans. Report any error to the centre immediately.

Documents Required

The document list below follows the official requirements published by the Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi, which sets out the general requirements and the additional requirements by purpose of visit. The centre’s checklist may add presentation rules, such as arranging copies in checklist order, so follow the checklist you are given when you book. All documents must be submitted in original. In principle, submitted documents are not returned, so if an important original such as a Nikah Nama is difficult to obtain again, submit it together with a clear copy. Documents in Urdu, such as a Nikah Nama, birth certificate, B-form or family registration form, should be submitted with an English translation duly attested by the concerned organisation.

Tourism, visiting friends or relatives: documents from the Pakistani side

  • Letter explaining the detailed reasons for the trip. Say what you plan to do, where you will go, and why. A vague letter weakens the file.
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the stay in Japan. A recent bank statement showing the last six months of transactions is the standard evidence. Japan does not publish a fixed minimum bank balance for visitors. What matters is that the funds are consistent with your trip, your income and your ties in Pakistan. A sudden large deposit shortly before applying invites questions, so keep your banking natural.
  • Proof of occupation or profession. An employment certificate noting your designation, length of service, salary and dates of vacation. Students should provide a school certificate and school ID card. Government employees also need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) or an Ex-Pakistan leave certificate from the concerned authority.
  • Proof of relationship (family visits). For example, Nikah Nama, B-form, domicile certificate and a copy of the computerized registration form.
  • Proof of friendship (friend visits). Photographs, letters and emails that show a genuine friendship.
  • Detailed day-by-day schedule of the trip. This matters more for Japan than for many other destinations. Japanese consular officers read itineraries carefully. List each day: where you will be, what you will see, where you will sleep. Make sure it matches your flight and hotel bookings.
  • Proof of accommodation. Hotel reservations for every night of your stay, or your host’s address if you are staying with family or friends.
  • Flight details for the entire trip. A flight itinerary issued by a travel agent, or air tickets. Do not buy non-refundable tickets before the visa is issued. A reservation or itinerary is enough at the application stage.
  • Any other proof for special circumstances. If anything about your trip is unusual, explain it and evidence it rather than leaving the officer to guess.

Visiting friends or relatives: documents from the Japanese side

If you have friends or relatives in Japan, the host side of the file is also required. If you have no friends or relatives in Japan, these requirements are waived.

  • Letter of invitation from your friend or relative, explaining the purpose and length of stay in detail.
  • Letter of guarantee from your friend or relative.
  • Certificate of employment issued for your friend or relative.
  • Bank statement showing the last six months of transactions, a bank certificate, or a certificate of income tax payment from your friend or relative, if the cost of the trip will be borne by them.
  • Certificate on registered matters of alien registration, or Certificate of Residence, with a description of the relationship among all family members, if your friend or relative is not Japanese.
  • Copy of your friend’s or relative’s passport, including Japanese visa pages, if they are not Japanese.
  • Family Registration (Koseki-Tohon), if your friend or relative is married to a Japanese national.
  • Detailed day-by-day schedule of the stay in Japan.

Business visits: extra documents

For a short business visit, add the Pakistani-side business evidence and the Japanese-side invitation documents:

  • From Pakistan. A company letter explaining the outline of the business and the reason for the visit in detail; National Tax Number (NTN) certificate and latest tax payment receipts; latest bank statement showing the last one year of transactions; proof of business such as bills of lading, bills of entry, shipping lists and invoices or receipts; official documents proving partnership, directorship or proprietorship (registration of firm, certificate of incorporation); an original recommendation letter from the concerned chamber of commerce along with the membership certificate; an import or export licence if you hold one.
  • From Japan. A letter of invitation explaining the purpose and length of the business visit in detail; a letter of guarantee; a certificate of company registration (Tokibo-Tohon) or company pamphlet for a listed company; a certificate of corporation tax payment or a profit and loss statement; and a detailed day-to-day schedule of the business visit.

Transit

If you are only passing through Japan on your way to a third country, the Consulate-General lists a shorter set of documents: a letter explaining the detailed reasons for the trip, air tickets and stopover hotel coupons, proof of sufficient funds for the stay in Japan, and the visa to enter your destination country.

Fees: What a Japan Visa Costs From Pakistan

This is the section most guides get wrong, so read it carefully. There are two separate charges: the consular visa fee and the application centre service charge.

Consular visa fee: exempt for Pakistani nationals

MOFA’s general fee schedule was revised with effect from 1 July 2026, the first revision since 1978. For applications accepted at overseas diplomatic missions on or after that date, the general fee is approximately 15,000 yen for a single-entry visa and approximately 30,000 yen for a multiple-entry visa, payable in the local currency of the country where the Embassy or Consulate-General issuing the visa is located. MOFA adds an important qualification: depending on the purpose of your visit and your nationality, fees may not be required, or the amount may differ.

For Pakistani passport holders, the fee is not required. An official MOFA embassy checklist for single-entry short-term stay visas lists Pakistan among the nationalities exempt from the visa fee. MOFA also states that if a visa is not issued, no visa fee is charged. So for an ordinary Pakistani applicant, the consular visa fee is zero.

VFS service charge: what you actually pay

Because applications go through the VFS Global / Gerry’s Visa Application Centre, you pay the centre’s service charge. Published guides and applicant reports put this at about PKR 3,000 to 3,500 per application, paid online when you book your appointment. The service charge is non-refundable whatever the outcome of your application. Optional extras such as courier return of your passport are charged separately.

Confirm the exact service charge on the VFS booking page on the day you book, because it is the figure most likely to change. Do not rely on an agent’s old fee chart. The only amount that matters is the one the booking page shows you.

Processing Time

The Embassy of Japan in Islamabad states the standard processing period plainly: when there is no problem with the contents of the application, it takes 6 working days from the time you apply to VFS Global / Gerry’s Visa until the visa is issued at the earliest.

Three qualifications matter:

  • Incomplete documents take longer. The Embassy says it will take more time if your application has incomplete documents, so check your documents carefully before applying.
  • Thorough examination takes much longer. In some cases which require thorough examination of documents, processing may take several months. The Consulate-General in Karachi adds that where documents must be referred for verification, or the application must be referred to MOFA in Japan, the assessment may take a month or more to complete.
  • The clock runs in working days. Weekends and public holidays do not count, and peak seasons such as cherry blossom season and the autumn foliage period are busier.

As a practical rule, apply at least four to six weeks before your intended travel date. If your travel date is fixed, for example a conference or a family event, apply as early as the centre allows. Applying late with a fixed departure date is one of the most common avoidable causes of a ruined trip.

Building a Strong Application

There is no interview for most Japan visit visa applications from Pakistan, and there is no published points system. The officer decides on the file. Four qualities separate a strong file from a weak one.

1. Consistency. Every document must tell the same story. Your form, your employer letter, your bank statement, your itinerary and your hotel bookings must agree on dates, names, employer, income and purpose. A single contradiction, such as leave dates that do not cover the trip, or a hotel booking in a city your itinerary never visits, raises a question that your file then has to survive.

2. A realistic itinerary. Japan rewards detail. Your day-by-day schedule should be specific: which city each day, which sights, how you travel between them, where you sleep. “Sightseeing in Japan” is not an itinerary. A plausible ten-day plan might spend three days in Tokyo, two in Kyoto, one in Nara, two in Osaka and the rest travelling, with named sights and realistic travel times. Do not plan to cover five cities in four days. Officers know the geography.

3. Funds that match the trip. Japan is an expensive destination. Your bank statement should show that you can pay for the trip you have described, including flights, accommodation, local travel, food and activities. A steady balance built up over six months is more convincing than a large sum deposited the week before you apply. If someone else is paying, say so and evidence it with their documents and a guarantee letter, rather than presenting their money as your own.

4. Ties to Pakistan. The officer needs to be satisfied that you will leave Japan at the end of your visit. Stable employment with approved leave, a business that needs you, family responsibilities and property all help. First-time travellers and young single applicants should take particular care here, because they have the least travel history to point to.

Common Mistakes That Cause Delays or Refusal

  • Applying at the Embassy instead of the centre. Ordinary applications are not accepted at the Embassy desk. Go through VFS Global / Gerry’s Visa, or your file will not even be lodged.
  • Submitting an incomplete file. Incomplete documents are not just a delay; the centre may refuse to accept the application at all. Check every item against the checklist.
  • Leaving columns blank on the form. All visa application forms should be printed or typed with no column left blank. Write “Not applicable” where a question genuinely does not apply, rather than leaving it empty.
  • A vague or copied itinerary. A day-by-day schedule copied from the internet, with no connection to your actual bookings, is easy to spot and hard to explain.
  • Booking non-refundable travel before the visa is issued. Reserve flights and hotels, but do not pay for non-refundable tickets until the visa is in your passport.
  • Hiding a previous refusal. If you have been refused a visa before, by Japan or any other country, be honest about it. A discovered omission damages your credibility far more than an old refusal explained properly.
  • Submitting false or altered documents. False documents lead to refusal and can close the door to future applications. Never use an agent who offers to “fix” bank statements or employment letters.
  • Expecting the Embassy to explain a refusal. The Consulate-General states that if a visa is not granted, the reasons will not be disclosed, because of its internal rules. There is no appeal on the merits. Your remedy is a fresh, stronger application later.

After Approval: Before You Fly

Check the visa sticker. Confirm your name, passport number, dates of validity and number of entries. A single-entry visa is normally valid for three months from issue, so your entry into Japan must fall inside that window.

Plan your arrival. At the port of entry, the immigration officer decides your period of stay, up to 90 days for Temporary Visitors, and can ask for your return ticket, hotel details and proof of funds. Carry printed copies of your itinerary, hotel bookings and return ticket in your hand luggage, not in checked baggage.

Consider travel insurance. Travel insurance is not listed as a mandatory document for a Japan visit visa, but Japan’s medical costs are high and you will be paying out of pocket without cover. A policy covering medical treatment, hospitalisation and trip disruption for the full stay is a sensible purchase, and it is worth arranging before you fly rather than after you need it.

Respect the conditions. Do not work, do not overstay, and do not change your purpose. Overstaying or working illegally can lead to detention, deportation and a ban on re-entry, and it damages the chances of every future applicant who follows you.

What If Your Visa Is Refused?

If your application is not granted, the Embassy will not disclose the reasons. That is frustrating, but it is the stated policy, and there is no point in demanding an explanation or asking for special treatment.

What you can do is practical. Wait, then reapply with a stronger file. In practice, consular guidance for Japan short-term stay refusals often involves a waiting period of around six months before reapplying for the same purpose, unless your circumstances have genuinely changed. Use the interval to fix the real weakness: a thin bank statement, a vague itinerary, weak ties, or missing host documents. A second application that repeats the same file and expects a different answer wastes your time and the centre’s.

If your circumstances change materially, for example a new job, a longer banking history, or a fully documented invitation with a guarantee, a fresh application that evidences the change is a different proposition from a repeat of the old one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Pakistani passport holders need a visa for Japan?

Yes. Pakistan is not on Japan’s visa exemption list of 74 countries and regions. You must hold a valid visa before you travel.

How much does a Japan visa cost from Pakistan?

The consular visa fee is exempt for Pakistani nationals. You pay only the VFS Global / Gerry’s Visa service charge, about PKR 3,000 to 3,500 per application, paid online when you book. Confirm the exact figure on the booking page, as it can change.

Where do I apply for a Japan visa in Pakistan?

Through the Japan Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global / Gerry’s Visa, in Islamabad or Karachi according to where you live. Ordinary applications are not accepted directly at the Embassy since 1 April 2024.

How long does a Japan visa take from Pakistan?

The standard processing period is 6 working days from application at the centre until issue, for a complete file with no problems. If extra checks are needed, it can take much longer, in some cases several months. Apply at least four to six weeks before you travel.

How long can I stay in Japan on a visit visa?

Temporary Visitor status is for stays of up to 90 days. The period you are actually granted is decided by the immigration officer at the port of entry. A single-entry visa is normally valid for 3 months from issue, which is the window in which you must enter Japan.

Is there an interview for a Japan visa?

Not normally. Most applications from Pakistan are decided on the documents alone. The centre or the Embassy may ask for additional documents if the file needs clarification.

Do I need a guarantor or invitation letter for a tourist visa?

No, not for a pure tourist trip. Invitation and guarantee letters are required when you are visiting friends or relatives, or travelling on a short business visit. For a tourist trip with no host in Japan, the host-side documents are waived.

Can I work in Japan on a visit visa?

No. Paid work is not permitted on a Temporary Visitor visa. Work and long-term stay require a Certificate of Eligibility obtained in Japan first.

Does Japan require travel insurance for a visit visa?

Travel insurance is not listed as a mandatory visa document, but it is strongly recommended because medical costs in Japan are high.

If my visa is refused, will the Embassy tell me why?

No. The Consulate-General states that the reasons for refusal are not disclosed. Your remedy is a fresh application with a stronger file after a suitable interval.

Conclusion

Japan is a destination worth the paperwork. The route from Pakistan is straightforward once you accept its two central facts: you apply through the VFS Global / Gerry’s Visa Application Centre, not at the Embassy, and the consular fee is exempt for Pakistani nationals, so your only payment is the centre’s service charge. The rest is preparation. Build a consistent file, write a detailed day-by-day itinerary that matches your bookings, show funds that genuinely cover the trip, and apply early enough that extra checks cannot wreck your plans. Do that, and the six-working-day standard is a realistic expectation rather than a hope.
